First edition.8vo. pp ix + 206 + maps + black and white photographs. Black cloth hardcover with pictorial dust jacket. A fine copy. When the Germans invaded Belgium in 1940, Gaston was 19. He and a small group of friends left home to join the army. With no money, and their only food supplied by villagers who had little themselve…s, they shuttle from French city to town in search of the remains of the Belgian army. Failing in his attempt to join the army, or to get to London, Gaston began his incredible career in the underground. Trying to be a Courier, he began his exploits carrying messages and money across the Pyrenees. Information was destined for England; money for the resistance. By mid 1942 he was known as Raymond and then Rinus and at the top of the gestapo's wanted list. But quick action and safe houses kept him free. At the behest of queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, Gaston or Rinus organised the dashed underground network known as Wim and was in charge of a network of close to 2000 spies.
