Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Auguste Mayer (illustrator). 1st Edition. A century and a half has passed since a French scientific expedition under the leadership of Paul Gaimard came to Iceland. Among the crew was the artist Auguste Mayer whose task it was to depict in his drawings the various characteristics of the people and geography of Iceland. With time his work has become a invaluable source of information with regard to the cultural history of the country. The drawings-almost 200 in number -are in this edition published in their entirety and in their original sequence. Most of them also appear in colour for the first time. The captions are printed in Icelandic,French and English. The volume is accompanied by a supplementary booklet containing poems relating to the enterprise. 2 volumes in slip-case.
