Richard Royston ("at the Angel"), the publisher, was the leading Royalist bookseller of the 1640s-50s, so the imprint already signals its political and ecclesiastical stance. Occasion & setting The sermon was preached at Watlington, Oxfordshire, 11 September 1652, during the Commonwealth, when parish pulpits were frequent arenas for sharp debate between conformist clergy and "sectaries" (Independents, Baptists, Seekers, etc.). The title's phrase "with some Interruption" isn't just dramatics?Mayne was publicly heckled and drawn into a disputation (the pamphlet frames the event as a formal "publick dispute"). It's one of the more vivid printed accounts of a parish-level flashpoint in the mid-century "war of the churches." Why it matters ? Snapshot of post-war religious contention (1652): from the parish aisle you hear a Church of England conformist arguing with emerging dissenting groups. ? Watlington dispute documented: the Watlington "publick dispute" becomes a printed event; it is often linked in contemporary sources with Baptist figures in the Abingdon-Henley circuit. ? Printed for Richard Royston, the leading royalist bookseller?so this is part of the concerted Restoration-minded print offensive of the early 1650s.

This is the text of an address Mayne delivered at Oxford University at the end of the term on May 27, 1662, speaking on the subject of the conduct of life. His own experience must have provided a context for his advice. According to the entry on Mayne in the 1911 edition of Encyclopedia Britannica, he was a graduate of Christ Church, Oxford, and had two college livings in Oxfordshire, but was disposed during the Commonwealth. At the time of this address, two years after the Restoration, he had himself been restored to church offices. According to the entry, âAt the Restoration he was made canon of Christ Church, archdeacon of Chichester and chaplain in ordinary to the king.â ESTC shows eleven copies in the British Isles (held by British Library, Cambridge University (2), Carlisle Cathedral, Durham University, Kingâs Lynn Library, Longleat House, Oxford University (3) & Westminster Abbey) and four in North America. The four in the U.S. also show up in a WorldCat search (under two OCLC numbers): Columbia University/Union Theological Seminary, Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas & UCLA (16137896, classified as a book) and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (62578570, classified as an article).
