Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Fine. English text with an Arabic title that translates as "Saudi, Hejaz and Nejd Post". Geometrically illustrated wraps 17x24cm. 158pp illustrated in b/w throughout. Fine. The first and only edition. Very rare with Worldcat locating just 5, all in the US (Columbia University, Library of Congress, Smithsonian, University of Texas, University of Utah). Jisc does not record it. This highly respected self-published work was the first serious study on the subject since the Survey of Egypt's "Short Note" (1919), Haworth & Sargent (1922), and Warin (1927): "The three books or booklets mentioned above are all that I have found of value in the Arabian philatelic area". Beyond these, the author reverted to a comparatively lengthy list of travel accounts, citing Burton, TEL, Twitchell, Palgrave, Philby among many others (p1). His history begins when "Hejaz Arabia's first postage stamps were not Arabian, but Egyptian", and when the Ottomans were opening post offices along the route of the Hejaz Railway ("this area is in dire need of more research"). On 27 June 1916, when Hussein declared the Hejaz free of Ottoman rule, "Pre-stamps" in the form of fee paid ink stamps were used, pending the creation of the first Hejaz issues by the Survey of Egypt. The survey proper begins with the first Hejaz issues in 1916 (I), and ends with Saudi Arabia's International Hydrological Decade Commemorative Issue in 1973 (CXXVIII).
