Decorative Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A nice clean copy of what is assumed to be the first edition, although no date of publication is stated. The illustrated and decorative cloth boards look remarkably well-preserved, especially considering that the Sunday School prize plate on the front paste down is dated 1905. The gilt title lettering to the front board and spine is still lovely and crisp. If you inspect the book very closely there is a tiny bit of wear to the very tips of the fore edge corners and rubbing to the spine ends. Internally the book is nice and clean with no owner inscriptions other than the prize plate mentioned earlier. There is some toning to the page block edge and to the end papers. In all though this is a lovely copy of quite a scarce book.…

This is wholesome fiction from a time when girls had pluck, fathers had authority, and life lessons arrived wrapped in fresh air and mild adversity. The cover alone is a triumph of early 20th-century earnestness: decorative borders, determined children, a hint of wholesome chaos. Dorothy herself appears mid-action, which is reassuring. One senses she will not faint delicately; she will cope . Inside you can expect: Youthful scrapes that build fortitude. Moral tests passed through good sense and sturdy boots.
