An exploration of Robert Burns' birthplace, this book seeks to answer the question of whether the current building is the actual birthplace of the famous Scottish poet. The author uses a trove of documents from the Incorporation of Shoemakers of Ayr, who purchased the property in 1781,… as well as oral accounts and physical evidence to firmly establish that the Burns Cottage of today is the very place where the poet was born in 1759. The book delves into the history of the cottage, from its humble beginnings as a clay and straw-thatched dwelling to its transformation into a public-house with expanding accommodations, a use which both preserved the building and provided livelihoods for its various occupants. Despite skepticism at various times that the current site is the actual birthplace, through detailed archival research, the author dispels such doubts. Beyond the preservation of the building, this book also sheds light on the preservation of Burns' legacy, with discussion of the erection of the monument to Burns and the efforts of the Incorporation of Shoemakers and subsequent caretakers to maintain and protect the cottage and its contents. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
