The book reveals the various bunkers built for the U.S Administration, including the Raven Rock alternate war headquarters (the Pentagon's wartime hideout), the Greenbrier bunker for the Senate and House of Representatives, and the Mount Weather central government headquarters amongst others. Developments in Canada, including the Ottawa 'Diefenbunker' and the regional government bunkers are also studied. There is something magnificently British about preparing for the end of civilisation by pouring concrete under a field, installing a telephone, and hoping the filing system survives the blast. Nick McCamley?s Cold War Secret Nuclear Bunkers is a guide to that strange subterranean world where bureauc…racy met apocalypse and decided the sensible thing was a door with a very serious lock. Beneath hills, offices, military sites and anonymous patches of countryside, governments planned their post-nuclear routines: communications, command chains, emergency governance, civil defence, monitoring posts, protected headquarters, and all the other cheerful arrangements required for carrying on as a nation once the nation above ground had become mostly heat, ash and unfortunate paperwork. The Cold War produced many kinds of madness, but the bunker has a special elegance. It is panic made architectural. It says: yes, the world may end, but not before we have labelled the switchboard. It imagines catastrophe not as chaos, but as an administrative challenge with maps on the wall, filtered air, bunks, generators, ration stores, and someone in a headset saying ?Can you repeat that?? while the counties gently glow. One must admire the optimism. Or the denial. With bunkers it is often hard to tell the difference. McCamley takes the reader into these hidden places with the proper mixture of technical curiosity and historical unease. These were not Bond villain lairs, despite the temptation to hope for swivel chairs and sharks. They were often cramped, functional, drab, over-engineered, under-loved spaces designed for people who would have the privilege of surviving just long enough to discover exactly how bad things were. The decor, one assumes, ran heavily to institutional paint, metal lockers and the spiritual warmth of a municipal swimming pool changing room. And yet they are fascinating. The bunkers reveal a whole secret geography beneath everyday Britain: command centres under polite landscapes, monitoring posts beside roads, regional seats of government tucked away from public imagination, places built to be unseen until the day everyone would very much wish they were unnecessary. They are monuments not to victory, but to contingency. Cathedrals of ?just in case.? Shrines to the idea that if the unthinkable happens, somebody should still be able to fill in a form. There is a black comedy in Cold War planning that never stops being unsettling. The language is calm, the diagrams rational, the structures solid, and the underlying assumption completely deranged: that after nuclear exchange, there would still be a recognisable ?after? in which procedure could resume. The tea may be radioactive, but at least the minutes will be taken. This Pen and Sword Military Classics copy is in Good condition, which is more than can be said for many of the strategic assumptions it describes. It has survived ordinary peacetime handling without needing blast doors, air filtration or a regional commissioner.
