Although there has been a recent growth in the literature on social skills and mental health, there has been little published in book form specifically for nurses. Yet it is nurses who are unqiuely placed to improve the skills of those with mental illness since, whether in the community, day hospital or long-stay institution, it is they who often have most contact with patients or clients. This book specifically examines the place of social skills training in the practice of psychiatric nursing. The first three chapters of the book give relevant background to the evidence for limited social skills in psychiatric patients and the expanding role of the nurse. Chapter 5 and 6 consider more practical elements such as selection and assessment of patients for a programme, goal-setting, role play, feedback, group versus individual approaches, etc. Chapters 7-9 examine relevant skills themselves, such as nonverbal communication, being assertive, etc. The book is aimed at both trained and student psychiatric nurses and should fill a significant gap in the literature. 258 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

A VG plus clean copy (save for staining to bottom of the spine) in a VG plus complete d/w which has had some professional repair. With a tipped in note to the inside cover from General Richard Mulcahy to "Jim-with best & good wishes, Dick, Xmas 1932, Lissenfield House, Rathmines". Lissenfield House was the family home of Richard Mulcahy. Mulcahy and his wife Mary Josephine "Min" Ryan were settled at Lissenfield for security reasons. The house was right next to Portobello Barracks. The recipient of this Christmas gift of a newly published book appears to be Dr James Ryan, brother -in-law of Mulcahy and ex IRA, Sinn Fein and Fianna Fail TD and newly appointed Minister for Agriculture in the first Fianna Fail government. Ryan was an Irish medical doctor, revolutionary and politician who served in every Fianna Fáil government from 1932 to 1965. Mulcahy was a controversial political opponent and a future leader of Fine Gael. He served as chief of staff of the Irish Republican Army during the War of Independence and became commander-in-chief of the National Army in the Irish Civil War after the death of Michael Collins. Mulcahy earned notoriety through his order that anti-Treaty activists captured carrying arms were liable for execution and for his failure to punish Free State army soldiers for atrocities. Mulcahy married Ryan's sister, Josephine (known to everyone as 'Min') in 1919. She had previously been engaged to Seán Mac Diarmada, a signatory of the Proclamation of Independence) who described her as the woman he would have married had he lived. She was one of the last people to visit him before he was executed by the British after the Rising. Ryan served as the medical officer in the General Post Office (GPO) during the Easter Rising and treated many wounds, including James Connolly's shattered ankle, a wound which gradually turned gangrenous. He was, along with Connolly, one of the last people to leave the GPO when the evacuation took place. Ryan was deported to HM Prison Stafford in England and subsequently Frongoch internment camp. Mulcahy served as chief of staff of the Irish Republican Army during the War of Independence and became commander-in-chief of the National Army in the Irish Civil War after the death of Michael Collins. Mulcahy earned notoriety through his order that anti-Treaty activists captured carrying arms were liable for execution and for his failure to punish Free State army soldiers for atrocities. A fascinating association copy of a scarce book linking two Irish revolutionaries, divided by the Civil War but obliged to be civil to each other by a marriage. Inscribed by Author(s).

The object of this book was to show the people of Ireland that in their struggle for independence they had the wholehearted sympathy and support of the vast majority of the American people. This book was written by an Irish Republican for Irish Republicans. The facts set forth are put down solely to inform Irish Republicans of the blunders made in the past so that their disastrous repetition may be avoided. Patrick McCartan (13 March 1878 - 28 March 1963) was an Irish republican and politician. McCartan was to take part in the 1916 Easter Rising with the Tyrone volunteers but did not, owing to Eoin MacNeill's countermanding order. He was arrested after the Rising and interned in an open prison in England. In 1917 he took "French leave" to return to Ireland and assist Sinn Féin in the by-elections being held throughout Ireland that year. McCartan contested the by-election in South Armagh for Sinn Féin but lost out to the Irish Parliamentary Party candidate. He was later elected in a by-election in Tullamore in 1918. He was re-elected in the 1918 general election. He was re-elected for Leix-Offaly at the 1921 elections. He gave the Anglo-Irish Treaty his support, albeit reluctantly, in the Dáil debates, saying he would not "vote for chaos." He blamed the whole cabinet for the situation and said that "The Republic of which Mr. de Valera was President is dead." Disillusioned, he quit politics for the next twenty years. At the meeting of the First Dáil in January 1919 McCartan was appointed Sinn Féin's representative in the USA where he would remain until 1921. One of his tasks was to secure American recognition before the Paris Peace Conference, 1919, but this proved impossible. While in the USA he renewed his acquaintance with his fellow Carrickmore native Joseph McGarrity. They persuaded Éamon de Valera to support the Philadelphia branch of Clan na Gael against the New York branch led by John Devoy and Judge Daniel Cohalan in their struggle to focus the resources of the Friends of Irish Freedom on Irish independence rather than domestic American politics. McCartan also assisted with the development of the "American Association for the Recognition of the Irish Republic". McCartan then negotiated with the Soviet Union in 1920-21 in an attempt to have it recognise the Irish Republic, at a time when both were pariah states.[4][5] Although Soviet Russia was atheist, he hoped that Ireland could act as "accredited representative of the Republic of Ireland in Russia the interests of the Roman Catholic Church within the territory of the Russian Socialist Federal Soviet Republic." Éamon de Valera; first registered as George de Valero; changed some time before 1901 to Edward de Valera; 14 October 1882 - 29 August 1975) was a prominent statesman and political leader in 20th-century Ireland. His political career spanned over half a century, from 1917 to 1973; he served several terms as head of government and head of state. He also led the introduction of the Constitution of Ireland. Prior to de Valero's poli.
