McClure's Magazine, founded in 1893, began with investigative journalism looking to expose the injustices in the U.S. government and large corporations. The initial group of journalists working for the magazine left in 1906 to begin The American Magazine. McClure's continued operations by focusing on literary works, publishing pieces by authors like Jack London and Rudyard Kipling, as well as art pieces by N.C. Wyeth, among others.

Boyden, who worked as a managing editor at McClure's Magazine and The American Magazine. John Sanborn Phillips, who inscribed this copy, was a co-founder of McClure's and the editor of The American Magazine until 1915. In his introduction to this memorial compilation, Phillips calls Boyden his "professional god-son," saying: "From the time he came to McClure's in 1898 as a young man of twenty-three, I saw him almost daily at the office. . . It was one of the continued, uninterrupted pleasures of my life to watch him grow from untried youht to the maturity of powers and character" (p.2).
