Hardcover. Condition: Fine. One of 500 copies printed by Lawton Kennedy, a noted Bay Area printer. Original publisher's beige cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine. Several leaves are unopened. 5 3/4" x 8 3/4." Eighty-four pages, complete. A few black-and-white illustrations, complete. The illustrations were taken from the author's drawings as they originally appeared in his journal. Pages are virtually pristine and intact except for light age toning. Covers are clean and intact overall but have slight discoloration and a few small marks or smudges. A Fine copy. This book contains the printed text of the journal kept by Evans S. McComas (1839-1907), a pioneer who traveled over the Oregon Trail from Iowa City to Oregon in 1862, from 1862-1867. The journals are organized by year and are printed chronologically. The journal for 1862 documents McComas's journey from Iowa City to Auburn, Oregon. His diary is replete with observations of natural scenery and descriptions of colorful events and encounters with different people. Some of the journals are relatively brief. For example, McComas's journal for 1867 is only about two pages in length. In his Introduction, Martin Schmitt highlights some of the features of McComas's diary. Schmitt says that while McComas was one of many pioneers who kept diaries, his is unique in that it is one of the few accounts documenting Auburn which was located in Oregon's northeast mining region. As with other pioneer diarists, McComas also had unique experiences by virtue of him being an individual and having chance encounters on his journey. One example of this is a dispute he had with a soldier which culminated in McComas shooting the soldier but without serious injury. The incident was apparently settled after an explanation to the soldier's superior officer. McComas also had various occupational ventures such as trying his hand at mining and founding the Whirlwind Remedy Company. Through this company, he sold Whirlwind Kidney and Rheumatic Remedy, a medicine purportedly made from a recipe given to him by a Cayuse friend, Chief Whirlwind. McComas also sold evaporated salts from Medical Lake, Washington. In the back is a series of pioneer ballads as they appeared in his diary, at least one of which was composed by him, "My Journey O'er the Plains." His charming sketches also offer rare documentation of life in the Powder Mines. Back colophon: "500 Copies, Designed and printed by Lawton Kennedy.".

Mintz 314 - McComas traveled to Oregon to escape from involvement in the Civil War. Mintz notes that "he tells of the trip, which, considering the alternative, he was prepared to enjoy. The illustrations, from the author's sketches, are apparently the only known contemporary record of life in the Powder River Mines. Nicely printed by Lawton Kennedy." For a bit of association status, front pastedown bears the stamp of Clyde Arbuckle, who died in January of 1998, was an expert on San Jose history, and was the author of "The History of San Jose" and "Santa Clara County Ranchos". l-49n.
