Card and signature are clean and intact. George W. McCrary (1835-1890) was a Republican politician who served in the Iowa House of Representatives from 1857-1860 and in the Iowa Senate from 1861-1865. McCrary was also a federal circuit judge and served as Secretary of War in the Cabinet of President Rutherford B. Hayes (1822-1893). Signed by Author(s).

Rutherford B. Hayes's Secretary of War (1877-79) had been a four-term Iowa congressman (1868-76). Large and bold "Geo. W. McCrary / Secy of War / Nov 16, 1877" penned in brown ink on the verso of his printed "The Secretary of War" calling card, heavy stock 3½" X 2ĵ", n.p. Near fine. A superb example, signed in office.

This disbound report has been rebound in plain black cloth to preserve and protect. No. 93, 45th Congress, 2d Session, May 28, 1878. The "Salt War" was a complex range war that concerned the ownership of huge salt lakes at the base of the Guadalupe Mountains in West Texas. The political struggle between two prominent men, one Charles H. Howard, the other Louis Cardis, began in 1866 and culminated in the violent death of Cardis at the hands of Howard, on the 10th of October, 1877, in El Paso. This action eventually grew into an armed conflict between Mexicans and Tejanos against a Texas politician (Howard) who was supported by the Texas Rangers. The upshot was that the right of private factions to own what was once community assets (the salt lakes in this case) was established through force. The report is well-presented and in sound tight condition with the rare map laid-in that has light wear to a few fold points. Overall a near fine copy.
