He was an active public orator on Socialist issues and a pamphleteer on both literary and political subjects. In addition to his literary and bookselling activities, McDevitt was politically active both as a member of the Socialist Party and as an election commissioner while James Rolph was Mayor of San Francisco. He and Upton Sinclair became correspondents based upon McDevitt carrying Sinclair's works in his bookstore and their shared interests in Socialist politics (University of Pennsylvania: Kislak Center). His idiosyncratic catalogs are full of the commentary on the above subjects, reflections and articles on the book trade, etc. , together with neologisms, puns, riddles. This in 1932 way before the cell phone: "Recently we had NINE orders for one item listed in our jurnalog. Proves that BOOK-COLLECTING gets the order if the price is attractive. Why not share in such goodreturns by listing a fu of ur items in BOOK-COLLECTING? ".
