As military history, Soldat is a rich vein of valuable ore, thanks to Siegfried Knappe's eyewitness participation in so many crucial and significant campaigns of the war~including the desperate defense of Berlin, where Knappe's role as operations officer to General Weidling had him shuttling between the lines of combat and Hitler's headquarters and bunker. Equally valuable and unusual are Knappe's descriptions of the early days of Operation Barbarosa and the experience of the frontline soldiers during the invasion of Russia. But these first~person accountings are not the book's only appeal. In Siegfried Knappe we find everyman~a dutiful soldier, a good and decent man. We recognize him as such~even though he unwittingly served a regime of unspeakable horror~because we see ourselves in him. And so we get a rare chance to understand how Hitler motivated a whole generation to carry out his monstrous schemes. And we learn at what cost, as we watch our man struggle to keep his bearings in life as Germany falls into rubble and his whole world collapses. After describing some five frightful years in a Soviet prison camp, Knappe's touching memoir ends with his deeply moving reunion with his wife and children, when he begins again to pick up the pieces of his life.

Edward "Ted" Ladd Widmer (born 1963) is an American historian, writer, librarian, and musician who served as a speechwriter in the Clinton White House. Widme…r was appointed a lecturer on history and literature at Harvard University in 1993 and worked in that capacity until 1997. From 1997 to 2001, he worked in the White House as a special assistant to President Bill Clinton, foreign policy speech writer and Senior Advisor for Special Projects, which involved advising on history and scholarship related issues. In 2001, Widmer was appointed the inaugural director of the C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience at Washington College. During his tenure, Widmer established the George Washington Book Prize, an annual award for literature on the founding era of the United States. On July 1, 2006, Widmer was appointed Director and Librarian of the John Carter Brown Library at Brown University. At the library, he led efforts to digitize the library's holdings and raised funding to save Haitian libraries in the wake of the 2010 earthquake. From 2012 to 2013, Widmer was a senior advisor to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Between 2010 and 2015, he helped to create and contributed to The New York Times' series "Disunion," which focused on the Civil War. In October, 2016, Widmer was appointed Director of the John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress. In 2018, he joined the faculty of Macaulay Honors College as a lecturer. As a divided nation plunges into the deepest crisis in its history, Abraham Lincoln boards a train for Washington and his inaugurationan inauguration Southerners have vowed to prevent. Lincoln on the Verge charts these pivotal thirteen days of travel, as Lincoln discovers his power, speaks directly to the public, and sees his country up close. Drawing on new research, this riveting account reveals the president-elect as a work in progress, showing him on the verge of greatness, as he foils an assassination attempt, forges an unbreakable bond with the American people, and overcomes formidable obstacles in order to take his oath of office. Derived from a Kirkus review: On Feb. 11, 1861, three weeks before his inauguration, President-Elect Abraham Lincoln boarded a train for Washington, D.C. This lively account describes that eventful journey. "Lincoln's safe delivery," writes Widmer, "would become, over the next thirteen days, a powerful symbol for the survival of democracy in America. As he traveled his circuitous route, Lincoln carried the aspirations of millions on his shoulders. Around the country, they were waiting for him." No one doubted the occasion's historical significance, so the train overflowed with reporters, officials, friends, and fans. The author describes Lincoln's wandering, 1,900-mile journey, with well-wishers lining the tracks and huge crowds whose members clamored to shake his hand and hear a speech. Not every speech was memorable, nor were the many encounters, mishaps, and demonstrations, so Widmer wisely cuts away to deliver histories of the cities and states along the route, their citizens' reactions to the impending crisis (multiple states had already seceded from the Union), and the impressions of witnesses. Plenty of Southern sympathizers proclaimed murderous intentions, and newspapers published breathless reports of hidden bombs, efforts to sabotage the rails, and cabals of sharpshooters. Concerned railroad officials called on Alan Pinkerton, head of the famous detective agency, whose operatives swarmed over the route and reported numerous plots to harm Lincoln. Widmer is not certain if any competent assassins were at work, but Pinkerton and rail officials had no doubt. They convinced a reluctant Lincoln to depart from his schedule at the end of his trip and travel incognito through Maryland to Washington on an ordinary passenger train. This passed without incident, but news of the furtive journey produced an avalanche of bad publicity before greater events took over. Lincoln buffs will undoubtedly devour the book. A colorful, richly detailed overture to Lincoln's odyssey. First Simon & Schuster Hardcover Edition [stated], First printing [stated]. Michael McLaughlin (Author photograph) (illustrator).
