4° (32 x 22,5 cm.). 12 montierte Heliogravuren. Farbig illustr. Kartonumschlag. Vgl. Bertolotti 12 ("Mes modèles", 1905-1914). - "The most prolific and inventive publisher in this field, however, was Amédée Vignola. In every issue of his magazine Mes Modèles (1905-1914), he recounted the improbable and fantastical adventures of girls, some more exotic than others, who came to his studio. It was he who had the novel idea of showing the girls first clothed and then nakedan idea that was then widely taken up and exploited by other photographers. In these photographs, contrary to normal practice, the model's pubic hair was always to norrm always visible" (A. Bertolotti).

Oblong 8vo (230 x 154 mm). VIII, 282 pp., lithographed throughout, with one folding lithographed table. Modern full red cloth with giltstamped title label to spine, original lithographed wrappers bound within. First edition. Lithographed French-Tamil and Tamil-French dictionary, the first of its kind in Europe, including a folding syllabus. The first of a series of French compilations that appeared in the 19th and 20th centuries, and the earliest publication of a two-way dictionary in Tamil ever. Particularly remarkable for the skilfully executed Tamil letters and its overall appearance, designed to resemble a manuscript. - Tamil (closely related to Malayalam) was the lingua franca for early maritime traders, with inscriptions found in places like Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Egypt. The language has a well-documented history with literary works, consisting of over 2,000 poems. This reference book was prepared by the French colonial officer Amédée Blin, a member of the Société Asiatique, who served in Pondicherry in French India from 1823, where he established language classes for colonial officers. Rarely seen at auction. - Original wrappers rather browned, interior occasionally browned and stained. Still a good copy. - Vater/Jülg 239. Zenker 2728. James, Tamil lexicography, 105. Brunet I, 365. OCLC 421313780 and 493287291. Not in Zaunmüller.…

First edition. 8vo. Engraved illustrations to text throughout. [iv], xxiv, 1088 pp., + 20 & 4 pp. publisher's catalogues. Publisher's green blindstamped cloth; boards slightly warped, headcap chipped, extremities rubbed. FIRST EDITION, EMILY BLACKWELL'S COPY, SIGNED ("Emily Blackwell") on the half-title by the pioneering female doctor, the third woman in the United States to earn a medical degree.Emily (1826-1910) studied medicine at Rush Medical College for a semester, and she completed her training at what is now Case Western Reserve University. She worked with her sister Elizabeth, the first woman in either the United States or Europe to receive a medical degree, at the New York Dispensary for Poor Women and Children, which Elizabeth had founded in 1853. In 1868 the infirmary's medical school for women officially opened. Elizabeth Blackwell served as professor of hygiene and Emily Blackwell as professor of obstetrics and diseases of women. Courty's treatise on childbirth was obviously of direct relevance to Emily's professorship.…

"Seltene erste Ausgabe. ? ? Etwas fleckig. ? Wurzbach III, S. 1; Goed. XII, 532, 71, 3; K. Glossy. Lit. Geheimberichte aus dem Vormärz. Anm. First edition of this tasteful gathering of original nude photographs for academics, sculptors, painters and engravers (ahem). The work was issued in ten parts (or 'serie') between 1906 - 1907, each with 10 albumen photographs. The present selection consists of 'Serie II' complete, with three additional images. Each photograph measures 7 3/4 x 4 3/4 inches and is mounted, landscape and portrait formatting, to gray boards measuring 12 x 8 1/2 inches. The whole housed in the original printed gray envelope with an tipped-on actual photograph of a a woman's face. The typography and the poses all speak of a deep art nouveau influence. Very scarce. The only copy recorded is at the Bibliotheque National. This copy has three additional albumen photographs. It is likely that a new subscriber started at Serie II and the publisher was kind enough to include a few remaining photographs from Serie I. Amdedee Vignola is today chiefly remembered for his publication L'Humanite Feminine published in 1907. It is claimed by some that the photograph Two Tuareg Girls he published in L'Humanite Feminine was used as the source for Matisse's sculpture Two Negresses of 1908. Vignola started off as a cartoonist but by the turn of the century was very involved in shadow plays, the most famous of which was his Le Sphinx (1894). In 1898 Vignola did the set designs for his friend Leon Durocher's Helene for the inaugural opening of the Pompadour Theatre. After the year 1900, Amadee Vignola took on the mantle of presenting soft porn to the French marker under the guise of art and he issued a number of works in this vein. By 1906, albumen photographs were no long the status quo but it is likely that Vignola issued his risque works in that medium as they have an air of antiquity.…
