Meerdink heeft de oorspronkelijke betekenis en ontwikkeling van de Ariadne-mythe bestudeerd. Hij komt tot de bevinding dat zij oorspronkelijk een Kretensiche godin is, een boomgodin, een vegetatiegodin, die sterft en verrijst. Op Cyprus verliest godin Ariadne, die bovendien meer lijkt of Demeter, het van de oostelijke, Foenicische Afrodite-Astarte. Ze bleef zelfs of Kreta in de schaduw van de Grote Godin en kon slechts op Naxos haar voornaamste kultusplaats als vegetatiegodin handhaven. De associatie van Aechaeïsche god de autochtone godin Ariadne doden, volgens een andere visie huwt hij met haar (?). De associatie van Ariadne met de heros Theseus hoort bij de relaties van Attica tot Kreta, waar de Minosfamilie thuishoort. Theseus is een lentekoning. Als Theseus definitief zijn heroskarakter bewijst door de Minotaurus te doden en hij daarna de prinses Ariadne, de dochter van Minos huwt, degradeert Ariadne van vegetatiegodin tot heroïne. Ze wordt dan pas godin door haar later huwelijk met Dionysus.' (A.J.J. de WITTE in P.C. Hooft, Theseus en Ariadne, 1972, p.20-21).
