Prima edizione (First Edition). . Hashima è una piccola isola situata al largo dell'estrema costa sud-occidentale del Giappone, a circa dieci miglia da Nagasaki. La sua sagoma simile a una nave da guerra le ha fatto guadagnare il soprannome di Gunkanjima ("isola della corazzata"). Durante l'ondata di industrializzazione del XIX secolo, sull'isola fu scoperto un filone di carbone e la società Mitsubishi vi aprì una miniera. Gli operai si stabilirono sull'isola e la popolazione aumentò: la piccola città mineraria si trasformò rapidamente in un insediamento moderno e autonomo. Negli anni '50, Gunkanjima divenne uno dei luoghi più densamente popolati del mondo, con oltre 5.000 abitanti. Ma dopo un incidente e la ristrutturazione del progetto minerario Mitsubishi, la miniera chiuse nel gennaio 1974. Gli ultimi abitanti abbandonarono l'isola, il collegamento via mare fu sospeso e da allora Gunkanjima è diventata una città fantasma.Marchand e Meffre hanno fotografato l'isola tra il 2008 e il 2012. "Yves Marchand (born January 5, 1981) and Romain Meffre (born March 9, 1987) are a French photography duo, working primarily with a large-format view camera and concentrating on photography of contemporary urban ruins. They live and work in Paris. The Ruins of Detroit, their series from 2005, introduced them to the general public. In 2009, Marchand and Meffre's photographs of ' Motor City' were noted by Time magazine, presenting their images for the first time in a portfolio on its website. An image from their series The Ruins of Detroit appeared on the cover of the October 5, 2009, issue of Time, thus introducing their work to a wider audience. Their project was subsequently reported on by newspapers and magazines (in particular El País, L'Espresso, The New York Times, The Guardian, Libération, Der Spiegel, Huffington Post. The city of Detroit was a metonym of the 2008 financial crisis. Marchand and Meffre met photographer Robert Polidori, photographer-author of books such as Zones of Exclusion: Pripyat and Chernobyl, Havana and After the Flood. His large-scale photographs of architecture and interiors had a similar sensitivity to their own works, and Polidori himself visited Detroit in 2001.
