3 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. 3 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. A fine letter to the New York dealer, [Roland?] Knoedler, with sketch in purple ink at the head of the page, of the village of Poissy (Meissonier's adopted home) and the Possy bridge. Meissonier writes: " . You certainly won't have my painting "de la rose" this season. I'd like to show it at the Salon, and will do my best to finish it on time, but I'm afraid that I'll be too late . I should love to be able to believe that this will be my most important painting, and I would be much saddened if it were to leave France without having been shown . I shall not inform you of the unfortunate events of our poor country -- the death of Gambetta affected me deeply, and what's going on now saps my morale as a republican and a patriot -- but i don't want to bother you with my dark thoughts . Our friend Knight is working also for the Salon and I like his painting very much . So, my dear Monsieur Knoedler, the school of Poissy is still a famous school . and now I bid you farewell for the moment, and send you my best wishes across the ocean . " Fine. Provenance: Dr. Max Thorek, with his collector's stamp.
