A description of the life and work of these famous artists published as a single volume by the Art Journal in 1887. Very good in decorative pink cloth which is a trifle soiled, A.E.G., with decorative endpapers. Illustrated within the text and with etchings.

Full Cloth. Condition: Fair. Presumed FIRST EDITION. [1887] Full sage green with gilt lettering on the front cover. Bevelled edges, worn through cloth at the extremities, soiled, binding a weak with the webbing visible in the gutter behind the front cover. No previous owner's names, not exlibrary. Overall in FAIR condition. Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier (21 February 1815 21 January 1891) was a leading French Classicist painter and sculptor famous for his depictions of Napoleon, his armies and military themes. Large engraved ticket, 185 x 230 mm. This item may have at some time been mounted and will bear traces on the reverse of adhesive or removal of mounts. "1807 Friedland" was Meissonier's most ambitious painting taking nearly 15 years to complete and portrayed one of Napoleon's greatest victories. It was bought sight unseen by the American department store magnate Alexander T. Stewart for the enormous sum of $60,000 in 1876. It was subsequently sold at his widow's estate sale in 1887 to Henry Hilton for $66,000. Hilton donated it to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), where it remains. However The Met records that in 1888, to aid in the reproduction of the picture, Meissonier revisited it in a slightly larger watercolour version. It is likely this version which is on display here. This version was etched by Jules Jacquet in 1890.
