Bound handsomely in red marbled paper over boards, crushed red Morocco leather to tips, spine, and with five raised bands and attractive gilt lettering to spine. Previous owner's bookplate, that of Jerome A. Hart, 1854-1937, publisher for a number of years of San Francisco's Argonaut newspaper. Super-handsome full color illustration at title page, then a stark and beautiful black-and-white engraving of Meissonier at frontis, tissue-guarded. Exceedingly replete with fine black-and-white illustrations, engravings and photogravures, heads and tails included. Stands most solidly on the shelf. An extensive Wikipedia article about him notes that "Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier (French: [m?s?nje]; 21 February 1815 ? 31 January 1891) was a French Classicist painter and sculptor famous for his depictions of Napoleon, his armies and military themes.
