Condition is VG: quite clean & completely unmarked, but with heavy page tanning; ffep has been excised. Binding strong & straight, hinges secure. One in a series of books published by Whitman (#2393) during World War II designed to show young girl readers how women could serve their country & fulfill their desire to be patriotic, as well as have a career & maybe find romance, by preparing to join one of the various branches of the Armed Services that were opening up for women. A companion set of books in the same series ("Fighters for Freedom") was aimed at boys. A FIRST EDITION, likely first printing, from 1943, this has brown cloth over boards stamped with orange lettering to front & spine. In 248 pages + 3 additional pages of other Whitman titles in rear, illustrations throughout text & decorative endpapers by Hedwig Jo Meixner. Condition is Good: very clean & bright, binding strong & straight, front hinge cracked, rear one intact but rear free endpaper is partially torn out. Pages heavily tanned, especially around edges, but unmarked save for old gift inscription in pen to front free endpaper. A few pages in rear show chipping & tearing to fore edge side. Mild rubbing to extremities & very slight corner bumping.
