C'est le Dalaï Lama lui-même, chef spirituel et temporel du Tibet, en exil en Inde depuis plus de quarante-cinq ans à la suite de l'invasion de son pays par la Chine en 1959, qui a choisi les Lamas photographiés pour ce livre et en a écrit la préface.
