Profusely illustrated with color…photographs, color paintings, black-and-white photographs, etc. plus color illustrated front and rear endpapers. "From the time a healing sulphur spring was discovered in the scenic Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia in 1778, The Greenbrier was destined to become an exclusive retreat of legendary proportions. In a lavish setting that has hosted presidents, potentates and society figures, dining has always ranked among the resort's finest pleasures. The Greenbrier means many things to many people, but foremost for anyone would be the experience of world-class cuisine and regal entertaining so characteristic of the place. Through fascinating tales, beautiful photographs and a collection of timeless recipes, [the book] presents the culmination of 200 years of gracious dining and service. An introductory chapter weaves a lively narrative of the resort's rise to culinary excellence. From The Greenbrier archives come accounts of the rustic dining hall beside a frontier "watering place" that grew to become today's paradigm of grace and luxury. A vast array of sumptuous recipes follows, along with outstanding photography of many of the dishes. Prized decorative arts and stately architecture throughout this National Historic Landmark form the backdrop for scenes that should inspire your own settings for entertaining. These favorite recipes will guide you in preparing a rich and diverse sampling of The Greenbrier's famous courses. you will recognize traditional favorites alongside exciting new dishes that showcase the best of America's regional cuisines. We are pleased to present in this volume dozens of recipes that are surprisingly easy to prepare in your own kitchen. Each has been specially adapted and tested in the kitchens of The Greenbrier, and a glossary of basic techniques is included to guide you toward achieving the standards of The Greenbrier's master chefs. [The book] is created to bring the romance of fine entertaining and a taste of The Greenbrier to your table." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Format is approximately 9 inches by 12 inches. 112 pages. DJ has wear and soiling. Profusely illustrated with color photographs. Accompanying the photographs are selected passages and excerpts from the writings and speeches of some of Northwestern's most celebrated profess…ors, administrators and alumni. This portrait of Northwestern is a collage of the many faces of the University. The photographs will guide the reads through familiar paths, into remembered building, and make the reader, presumably an alumni, once more a part of Northwestern activities. The Indian Summer days of Fall Quarter, filled with the color and excitement of a new academic year, com to life on these pages. With the coming of Winter Quarter, you will find yourself remembering both the cold walks to Teach for a lecture and the warmth of faculty firesides. Who can forget the familiar harbingers of Spring Quarter at Northwestern, the purple and white crocus covering the lawn in from of University and Harris Halls. May brings returning alumni home for reunions. Reflecting on June, when the academic year winds down, you will relive the University focus on Commencement. This is Jack Mellot's third book. It is the culmination of a year's worth of journeys to Evanston, where the photographer explored the campus of Northwestern with his camera, to get the feeling of the University. Jack Mellott has been a freelance photographer since 1985 and his assignments have ranged from corporate photography to locations and advertising work. He is a member of the American Society of Magazine Photographers. Northwestern University is a private research university in Evanston, Illinois. Founded in 1851, Northwestern is the oldest chartered university in Illinois and is ranked among the most prestigious academic institutions in the world. Chartered by the Illinois General Assembly in 1851, Northwestern was established to serve the former Northwest Territory. The university was initially affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church, but soon grew to be nonsectarian. In 1896, Northwestern became a founding member of the Big Ten Conference, and later joined the Association of American Universities as an early member in 1917. The university grew to be the third largest university in the United States by the turn of the 20th century. The university is composed of eleven undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools, which include the Kellogg School of Management, the Pritzker School of Law, the Feinberg School of Medicine, the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, the Bienen School of Music, the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Medill School of Journalism, the School of Communication, the School of Professional Studies, the School of Education and Social Policy, and The Graduate School. Northwestern's campus lies along the shores of Lake Michigan in Evanston. The university's law, medical, and professional schools, along with Northwestern Memorial Hospital, are located in Chicago's Streeterville neighborhood. The university also maintains a campus in Education City, Qatar and academic centers in Miami, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. Past and present Northwestern faculty and alumni have included numerous heads of state, 22 Nobel Prize laureates, 42 Pulitzer Prize winners, 23 MacArthur Fellows, 28 Marshall Scholars, 94 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 16 Rhodes Scholars, 10 billionaires, and 24 Olympic medalists. First Edition [stated], presumed first printing. Jack Mellott (Photography) (illustrator).
