Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. This is a transcription, in typescript, of a series of eight articles which appeared in the 'Gaelic American' between April 14 and August 4 1917, penned by 'An Irish Volunteer Officer' [Liam Mellows] detailing the history of Na Fianna Éireann which was founded in September 1909 in Dublin with the aim of '[training] the youth of Ireland, mentally and physically, to work of the independence of Ireland'. Mellows was one of the principal organisers of Na Fianna between 1909 and 1913, and later of the Volunteers in Galway. Following the 1916 Rising Mellows escaped to the United States and it was during his sojourn there that these articles were written. Included also in this typescript is an earlier article by Mellows titled 'The True Story of the Galway Insurrection'. It was published in the Gaelic American in January 1917. It includes sections on the attack on Clarinbridge Barracks, The Fight at Oranmore, Operations at Athenry, Victory at Carnmore Cross-Roads, British Warships in Galway Bay, British Brutalities after the Rising. Liam Mellows was executed by the Free State Government in December, 1922 in reprisal for the killing of Seán Hales TD. These articles were transcribed by Sean Daly, founder of Tower Books Publishing, Cork, during his time in North America in the 1960s. Bound in plain cloth-covered boards - spine blank. pp 98 - approximately 20,000 words. Images available on request.
