Art / Print / Poster
This is 1972 painting, mixed media, by the Scottish-Canadian artist Grace Melvin (1896-1977), who was known for her vellum illuminations, religious scenes and altar pieces. Her works are included in numerous museums, art galleries and private collections worldwide. Melvin also published and illustrated numerous books, most notably those by famed Canadian ethnographer Marius Barbeau (see photos 7 & 8). Her 1930 book Basic Lettering for Art Students is still used in schools today. Her most famous work is The Books of Remembrance for the Canadian Engineers of World War I, which remain on display at London's St Paul's Cathedral. (see photos) Melvin (see photo) was born in Glasgow in 1896 and, at age 15, began studying illuminated manuscript and lettering at the Glasgow School of Art, under the guidance of Charles Rennie Macintosh, Maurice Grieffenhagen, Robert Anning Bell, and Caley Robinson. She spent some time at the British Museum, where she received special permission to recreate some of its illuminated works; she also worked as a scribe for the City of Glasgow. Back at the Glasgow School of Art, she became Head of Lettering & Illumination. Another alumna of the Glasgow school was Melvin's older half-brother, the artist Charles Hepburn Scott. Scott had emigrated to Canada and was in the process of co-founding the Vancouver Art School, which is now Emily Carr University of Art & Design. At his request, Melvin moved to Vancouver and was made head of the new school's design department. In 1952, Melvin left teaching to become a full-time painter. She began to create landscape, garden and urban coastal scenes, working mainly in watercolor, oil, and ink. Toward the end of her life, she did a series of abstract paintings?this is one of those last paintings. Melvin died in Vancouver in 1977; this painting was a gift from her family to the current owner in 1990. At the time, for insurance purposes, it was appraised at $2000.00. The painting is mixed media, in its original frame. Photo 1 is in bright light; photo 2 is in its normal light, which is a dark bedroom. It has been hanging in that same place for all of these years. Her signature is a little 'M'. On the back, someone has written 'Blizzard' and noted the provenance. It is 23 ¼" wide, 27" high and 1 ½" deep. The frame is black metal, with ¼" visible on the front. Then there is 1 1/8" of beige canvas. Then 1/8" of silver metal. Then ¼" of white wood. IMPORTANT: The total price here includes having the piece packed for shipping but DOES NOT INCLUDE THE PRICE OF SHIPPING. For that, I need your location and I will get you the correct rate.
