Hardcover in illustrated boards, 127pp. A well-designed portrait photography book taking its title from the artist-photographer's use of the social media hashtag 'harshbeautiful', although the book takes a critical standpoint to social media's image filters and clickbait fantasy, instead opting for stark, gritty, harsh and sharp deep-definition black and white photographs - mostly close-ups of faces of handsome men with beards. The artist describes the conceptual origins in gay "beefcake" photography in an introductory personal essay. Contains other texts by John Mercer and Simon Watney. Book design by Robin Forster, and overall production by Jonathan Stephenson at London's Rocket Books. Rare. Not currently in OCLC or Copac. Minor wear to boards, otherwise like new.
