Einari Merikallio (18881961) war ein weltweiter Pionier der quantitativen Erfassung von Vogelbeständen. Die Linientransekt-Methode: Er ersetzte vage, subjektive Begriffe wie "häufig" oder "selten" durch präzise numerische Schätzungen, indem er zu Fuß 2.537 Kilometer lange "Linientransekte" durch Finnland zurücklegte und dabei die Vögel innerhalb eines festgelegten Sichtbereichs zählte. Dank seiner akribischen Datenerfassung konnte er zwischen 1941 und 1956 die genauen Brutbestände und die regionale Verbreitung von Vogelarten für das gesamte Land ermitteln. Über die reine Datenerfassung hinaus widmete sich Merikallio der Bewahrung kultureller Schätze und dokumentierte rund 10.000 regionale und historische finnische Vogelbezeichnungen für 200 verschiedene Arten. …
