Written by architecture historian and critic Jayne Merkel, the book begins with a history of other outdoor music structures and the decision to build on the river site. Merkel discusses Graves' development as a leader of the post-modern movement and draws upon his sources in ancient amphitheaters, as well as his other structures in Portland, Louisville, and San Juan Capistrano.
