Un volume in-12°, demi-reliure cuir rouge sans élégance particulière mais dos à 4 nerfs et pièce de titre en lettres dorées , plats cartonnés de couleur vieux rouge, 249 pages. Il s'agit d'une des publications de LEO TAXIL, qui avait créé la Librairie Anti-Cléricale en 1875 et dont plusieurs ouvrages avaient non seulement fait scandale mais s'étaient révéles souvent être des faux, ou des textes "traffiqués". Ici, il ne s'agit nullement du texte du Curé MESLIER qui, d'ailleurs, n'avait pas pour titre "Testament" mais MEMOIRE". Il s'agit donc d'une sorte de montage, comportant de nombreux manques et de nombreus passages ré-écrits, s'inspirant prétendument du texte initial de Jean MESLIER. Le titre mentionne le fait que cette édition est absolument conforme à l'édition de D'HOLBACH de 1772; là aussi, il y a entorse à la vérité: D'HOLBACH a bien écrit une oeuvre anonyme intitulée LE BON SENS DU CURE MESLIER mais il ne s'agissait nullement du texte original de MESLIER, infiniment plus complexe et résolument athée. Le livre publié par Léo TAXIL est intéressant certes en tant qu'expression du courant d'anticléricalisme qui se répandait de plus en plus dans certains milieux durant la seconde moitié du 19ème siècle. Nous invitons le lecteur à se reporter au vrai texte initial du curé Jean MESLIER: MEMOIRE DES PENSEES ET DES SENTIMENTS DE JEAN MESLIER SUR UNE PARTIE DES ERREURS ET DES ABUS DE LA CONDUITE ET DU GOUVERNEMENT DES HOMMES (1729).
