Messinger (1695-1750), graduated Harvard in 1717 and served as the pastor of the First Church in Wrentham from 1719 until his death. He came to the notice of Cotton Mathe…r at a young age, who noted in his diary in July 1714: "There is a poor Lad, but one of uncommon Capacity for Learning, to whose Education at the College I would contribute, and stir up the Charity of others." Messinger was noted as an evangeliucal preacher and became a lively voice of the Great Awakening. See Thomas Prince's Christian History (1743) for a contribution b y Messinger, describing the revival in Wrentham. Manuscripts by Messinger are rare; we note only a collection in the Congregational Library, Boston. Together, 12pp. (each 4pp.), written in ink in a small neat hand. Each dated by Messinger with the dates the sermons were given. Small 8vo.
