Résumé : La sensibilité de Balzac a été faussée par un double drame intime, drame conjugal d'une part, drame filial de l'autre. Mme Balzac avait été la maîtresse du propriétaire de Saché, M. de Margonne, et el…le avait eu de lui un fils, Henry, qu'elle préférait à Honoré. Le malentendu de la mère et du fils n'a pas été sans influer sur sa vision de l'humanité. De son naturel, Balzac était optimiste, il faisait confiance à la vie. Or, son oeuvre est pessimiste, ses peintures sont noires. La clé de cette contradiction est peut-être dans ses souffrances d'enfant. L'écrivain n'avait pas beaucoup de sympathie pour l'ancien amant de sa mère ; en revanche, M. de Margonne subissait comme tout le monde, et peut-être plus que tout le monde, l'ascendant d'Honoré. Attaché ou non à celui-ci, Balzac usa largement de son hospitalité. Sa vie fut jusqu'à la fin jalonnée de séjours plus ou moins prolongés à Saché, lieu balzacien par excellence. Il y conçut, y écrivit en tout ou partie une trentaine d'oeuvres : César Birotteau, Louis Lambert, Le Père Goriot, Les Illusions perdues, Le Lys dans la vallée, Le Médecin de campagne, Une Ténébreuse Affaire, Eugénie Grandet, etc. Saché, mon refuge. C'est Balzac lui-même qui le dit on ne saurait s'en étonner, Saché ayant été consacré " le lieu balzacien par excellence". De treize à quarante neuf ans, veille de sa mort, Balzac vient souvent à Saché ; il y séjourne surtout pendant la décennie 1830. On sait par sa correspondance que plus de trente romans et nouvelles on été, en tout ou partie imaginés, écrits ou corrigés dans sa petite chambre. C'est là que 1e " galérien de la plume et de l'encre" travaillait quinze heures par jour ! Un lien affectif unit Balzac à Saché. Pour comprendre sa vie et son oeuvre, il faut l'y regarder vivre. À propos de l'auteur : Paul Métadier (1918-2021) a été le grand mécène et le conservateur bénévole pendant des décennies du château de Saché, devenu patrimoine du département d'Indre-et-Loire. Nul autre que lui n'est le mieux à même, aujourd'hui, d'ouvrir au lecteur la porte de cette demeure où souffle le génie balzacien.
