"Während Methfessel auf den Gebieten Oper und Oratorium nichts Bleibendes hinterließ, war seine Rolle im Chor- und Liedwesen bahnbrechend. Methfessel [1785-1869] war ab 1810 als Hof- und Kammersänger in Rudolfstadt tätig. 1818 erschien sein "Allg. Commers- und Liederbuch", das die Entwicklung des dt. Volksgesangs entscheidend beeinflusste. Er war mit Goethe bekannt und unterrichtete Schillers Tochter Emilie im Gesang. 1825 gründete er in Hamburg die Liedertafel und war ab 1832 in Braunschweig als Hofkapellmeister tätig (vgl. MGG).

Folio. 1 p. Randläsuren am linken Rand. An einen Verleger. Methfessel bittet darum die beigelegten Beurtheilungen dem Herrn Red. der mus. Ztg.", gemeint ist Robert Schumann als Herausgeber der Neuen Zeitschrift für Musik", mit meinem freundlichsten Gruße gefälligst einhändigen zu wollen. Die restierenden Recensionen und resp. kurze Anzeigen sollen bald nachfolgen. Ich hielt es für zweckmäßig, dem Wildschützen den Vorzug zu geben []" - Methfessel studierte von 1807 bis 1809 Theologie und klassische Philologie in Leipzig, wirkte daneben als Sänger an Gewandhauskonzerten mit und wandte sich ganz der Musik zu, als ein Stipendium der Fürstin von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt ihm eine Gesangsausbildung bei Francesco Ceccarelli in Dresden ermöglichte. 1810 bis 1822 stand er als Hof- und Kammersänger im Dienst des rudolstädtischen Hofes, ging dann als Musikdirektor und Gesanglehrer nach Hamburg und wurde 1832 Hofkapellmeister in Braunschweig.

Dieser hatte Methfessel wunschgemäß den Anfang einer Dichtung übersandt, die der Komponist für eine geplante Liedersammlung (sein Allgemeines Commers- und Liederbuch"?) in Musik setzen wollte. [] wie haben Sie mich durch Ihren neusten Brief und durch den Vorgeschmack des herrlichen Liedes erfreut! Aber wie konnten Sie mir zutrauen, ich sey empfindlich über Ihre abschlägliche Antwort gewesen, ich, der zu hundert Malen, oft den besten Freunden, ähnliche Antworten gegeben hat, und der recht gut weiß, daß das Sprichwort bey den Künstlern eben so paßend umgekehrt heißen kann: ,Das Fleisch ist willig, nur der Geist ist schwach!' [] Der Augenblick, wo Sie das Frauenlied empfiengen, muß ein heiliger gewesen seyn, denn ob ich gleich nur den ersten Vers bis jezt besitze, so steht doch schon das Ganze vor meiner Seele. Um Gotteswillen schicken Sie mir es auf den Flügeln des Sturmwindes, wenn Sie nicht wollen, daß ich Extrapost nehme, und es selbst abhole. Auch die beiden Lieder, auf die Sie mich im vorigen Briefe aufmerksam machten, bitte ich mir zu communiciren; ich habe die Almanachs, in denen sie stehen, nicht zur Hand, und mögte Sie überdieß gern von Ihnen selbst, mein geliebter Freund, empfangen. Die Sammlung erscheint nun erst zu Johanni, und zwar im eigenen Verlage, um sie mit dem Fleiße und der Sorgsamkeit in die Welt treten zu laßen, die einem Werke ziemt, das einer Nation angehören soll. Sehr verbinden würden Sie mich auch in dieser Hinsicht, wenn Sie Ihren rühmlichst erworbenen Einfluß auf unser deutsches Publikum für mein Unternehmen benutzen, und so in doppelter Natur meinem Werklein Glanz und Ehre verschaffen wollten. Das Wie? überlaße ich Ihnen so vertrauensvoll, als dem ewigen Vater die Weltregierung: Sie werdens wohl machen. Ihr Lied soll dafür auch die Krone des Ganzen werden, oder die Musen sollen meinen Zorn empfinden! Ich habe mir vorgenommen, das Lied ganz in Ihrem Sinne, nemlich mit voller Musik zu componiren, und werde es in doppelter Gestalt erscheinen laßen, so daß es in der Reihe der Lieder mit Fortepiano, im Anfange aber mit Instrumenten abgedrukt wird: Aber nur bald, recht bald die übrigen Verse! - Sollten Sie ein Exemplar Ihrer neuen Harfe zu verleihen haben, so wüßte ich Jemanden, der sich recht glücklich fühlte, wenn Sie es ihm auf einige Zeit überließen [] Die Trommel ruft mich zum Exerciren. (Sie müßen wissen, daß sich bey uns ein imposanter Landsturm organisirt!) []". - Zu dem erwähnten "Frauenlied": 1814 erschien von Friedrich Kind bei Göschen in Leipzig: Die Körners-Eiche und Die Deutschen Frauen.
