Morgan & Co. was outperforming its rivals. It was the most profitable of the nation's 15 largest bank holding companies for two consecutive quarters. Focus on commercial and investment banking: In June 1985, an executive told the New York Times that the bank was "adapting to a changing environment" and aimed to be a strong commercial and investment bank. This emphasis on non-consumer banking was a key factor in its high profitability. Embracing deregulation: The 1980s was a period of intense banking deregulation. J.P. Morgan & Co. was a vocal proponent of overturning the Glass-Steagall Act, which separated commercial and investment banking. The bank was beginning to test the limits of these regulations by expanding its securities and underwriting activities. Leadership change: In June 1985, Morgan Guaranty Trust announced it was shifting two key executives, though no reason was given.
