Newcomb on the first blank leaf, dated Mar 8,1903, Denver Colo. Copyright 1875 by Cyrus F. Newcomb & Company. Front and back binding is taped. Ships same or next business day with delivery confirmation. The Book of Algoonah: Being a Concise Account of the History of the Early People of the Continent of America, Known as Mound Builders is a rare 19th-century lost race novel published in 1884. While it is cataloged under the name Cyrus F. Newcomb , who was the publisher and copyright holder, the text itself is frequently attributed to anonymous authors or individuals like J.M. Hanks. The book is a fictional history describing the migration of a prehistoric people from coastal China to the Pacific coast of North America and eventually into the American Midwest. Mound Builders: It focuses on the "Mound Builders," a term historically used to describe the indigenous peoples who constructed various styles of earth mounds for religious, ceremonial, and residential purposes. Literary Style: It is written in a pseudo-historical or biblical style, sometimes using archaic language to recount battles and migrations (e.g., "And when the morning was come. the men of Persia and of Assyria. fell upon the men of Aegyptus"). The book was originally published by Little & Becker in St. Louis in 1884, with a copyright date of 1875. It is considered a culturally significant artifact of early American fiction and is currently in the public domain in the United States. Bookseller Inventory # BD1-017-00406.

cat40a (illustrator). Green cloth, covers stamped in blind, spine ruled & lettered in gilt. Floral end papers. A bright, fine copy, unusual in such nice condition. A couple of small pencil notes within, indicate the authorship of a particular poem or chapter. Inscribed from C.F. Newcomb on the first blank leaf, dated 1892. Very biblical and proverbial in tone, this novel advances the idea that the Mound Builders were descended from tribes which were originally from Egypt and Assyria, and that they built great cities in North America around 2000 B.C. A copy in the Huntington Library bears an inscription which suggests that the author was J.M. Hanks; it is likely that Cyrus F. Newcomb was the publisher. Clareson: Science Fiction in America: 1870s-1930s: 593. Wright III: 598.
