Michael Buthe è nato il 1° agosto 1944 a Sonthofen, nel sud della Germania. Dal 1964 al 1968 ha studiato alla Werkkunstschule di Kassel. Successiv…amente ha studiato alla Kunstakademie Düsseldorf come allievo di Joseph Beuys. Inizia a esporre nel 1968, partecipando alla storica mostra di Harald Szeeman When Attitude Becomes Form: Live in Your Head alla Kunsthalle di Berna l'anno successivo.[3] Alcune delle sue opere più importanti in questo periodo consistevano in dipinti realizzati tagliando la stoffa e mettendo a nudo le barre del telaio. Negli anni Settanta Buthe iniziò a viaggiare molto in Africa e in Medio Oriente, soprattutto in Marocco, dove soggiornò a lungo nelle città di Essaouira e Marrakesh. I suoi soggiorni all'estero influenzarono pesantemente il suo lavoro, incorporando i luoghi e i suoni dei Paesi visitati nel suo linguaggio visivo. Queste esperienze hanno anche stimolato l'impegno con elementi spirituali e mitologici nel lavoro di Buthe. Le sue opere sono in collezioni di numerosi musei, quali lo S.M.A.K - Stedelijk Museum voor Actguele Kunst di Gand, la Tate Britain di Londra, il Centre Georges Pompidou di Parigi, il Museo d'Arte dell'Arcidiocesi di Colonia, il Museum Ludwig, sempre a Colonia.
