First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 180 pages. Published in 2017. Retrospective Monograph, presented as a primer. One of the single best books on the transgressive art of Gilbert & George. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as hardcover original only. There is NO American Edition. A brilliant production by Gilbert & George: Regular-sized volume format. Glossy pictorial hard boards with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Art by Gilbert & George. Text by Michael Bracewell. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Italy to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents "What Is Gilbert & George?". The short answer: Resonant layers of meaning engendered by the artists' juxtaposition of traditional British attitudes with iconography drawn from the social and sexual margins. Performance artists who also use the traditional genres and photography, Gilbert & George are transgressive in that they re-value (rather than de-value) their central British-ness and self-imposed marginal status at the same time. "Over the course of 37 short chapters, Bracewell has created an accessible handbook to their work. Provides candid insights into their working practice, East London, sex, Victorian art, nationalism, and male-ness, among many other subjects" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Gilbert & George collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed and inscribed in black pen-marker on the front free endpaper by the artists: "With love from Gilbert & George". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. There is no recipient named. This title is a contemporary art classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and inscribed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: There is NO American Edition. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with color plates. Two of the most important and influential artists of our time. A fine copy. ISBN 1912122022. Signed by Author.

Close Quarters is the author's first novel, published in England by Hodder and Stoughton in 1947, it did not appear in the United States until 1963. By then Gilbert's reputation had been firmly established in both countries and his regular American publisher for many years had been Harper & Brothers. Close Quarters, however, was published by Walker and Company, a less prestigious house. In it we are introduced to Chief Inspector Hazlerigg, who will go on to be a recurring character in a number of Gilbert's works throughout the next ten years. Written while he was a schoolmaster at Salisbury. He now considers the tale cluttered, but the plan showing who was where in the close of Melchester Cathedral on the critical evening makes clear the theories of the official and unofficial detectives: Chief Inspector Hazlerigg and the dean's nephew. Gilbert, who was appointed CBE in 1980, was a founder-member of the British Crime Writers' Association. Contains frontispiece Cathedral floor plan and a variant of which repeated to the text, and three crossword grids, 252 pp. From the private library and estate of Frank Williams. Text block edges browned, with light soing to the cloth covers and in Good condition, no dust wrapper. Member of the P.B.F.A. DETECTIVE | CRIME FICTION.
