Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 2020 Foreword INDIE awards winner"Day-to-day life in immigrant communities is described with refreshing clarity and heart. an unusually accessible primer on immigration law and a valuable guide to the ways it currently works to perpetuate an excluded immigrant underclass with diminished rights."-The New York Review of BooksThe national debate over American immigration policy has obsessed politicians and disrupted the lives of millions of people for decades. The Battle to Stay in America focuses on Las Vegas, Nevada-a city where more than one in five residents was born in a foreign country, and where the community is struggling to defend itself against the federal governments crackdown on undocumented immigrants. Told through the eyes of an immigration lawyer on the front lines of that battle, this book offers an accessible, intensely personal introduction to a broken legal system. It is also a raw, honest story of exhaustion, perseverance, and solidarity. Michael Kagan describes how current immigration law affects real peoples lives and introduces us to some remarkable individuals-immigrants and activists-who grapple with its complications every day. He explains how American immigration law often gives good people no recourse. He shows how under President Trump the complex bureaucracies that administer immigration law have been re-engineered to carry out a relentless but often invisible attack against people and families who are integral to American communities.Kagan tells the stories of people desperate to escape unspeakable violence in their homeland, children separated from their families and trapped in a tangle of administrative regulations, and hardworking long-time residents suddenly ripped from their productive lives when they fall unwittingly into the clutches of the immigration enforcement system. He considers how the crackdown on immigrants negatively impacts the national economy and offers a deeply considered assessment of the future of immigration policy in the United States. Kagan also captures the psychological costs exacted by fear of deportation and by increasingly overt expressions of hatred against immigrants. 1.566.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. "First Printing" stated. Number line complete 5 4 3 2 1. Attorney Michael Kagan rails against the (occasional, half-hearted) enforcement of our immigration laws, asserting it's fine for millions of military-age foreigners to sneak into this country illegally -- even though America generally admits far more LEGAL immigrants (including legitimate asylum seekers) than any other nation in proportion to its population -- after at least a MODEST screening for infectious diseases (noticing any new cases of leprosy?) and the likelihood they're going to blow things up. Needless to say, he hates and fears Donald Trump, and anyone else who wishes to enforce our long-established Immigration laws. And, of course, he refuses to use the term "illegal alien" to discuss illegal aliens. Yet he is, incredibly, allowed to "teach law" (or his version of it) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. (Ain't DEI great?) He ain't seen nothin' yet. 201 pp. including Notes and Index.

Michael Belfiore has written the first truly definitive history of private spaceflight. His insights into the harrowing test flights of Burt Rutan's SpaceShipOne and the inside tour of hotel magnate Robert Bigelow's orbital hotel project are fascinating. This book is a riveting account of how this ragtag collection of innovative thinkers, brave pilots, and bold visionaries is--right now--launching one of the most exciting new industries in history. Belfiore's eloquent writing and exhaustive reporting, as well as his imaginative projections of where this will take us all--really brings this mysterious, secretive world to life. Michael Belfiore is an author and journalist. Some of his notable works include The Department of Mad Scientists: How DARPA is Remaking Our World, published by Smithsonian Books Rocketeers] and The Way People Live - Life Aboard a Space Station. He has written numerous articles for Popular Mechanics and Popular Science. "That this story is still unfolding makes it especially exciting to read. These men are still in their workshops, tinkering their way into orbit." â"David Gelles, FORBES. On June 21, 2004, SpaceShipOne, built by aircraft designer Burt Rutan, entered space and ushered in the commercial space age. Investment capital began to pour into the new commercial spaceflight industry. Richard Branson's VirginGalactic plans to ferry space tourists out of the atmosphere. Las Vegas hotelier Robert Bigelow is developing the world's first commercial space station (i.e., space hotel). These space entrepreneurs, including Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, now see space as the next big thing. In Rocketeers, Michael Belfiore goes behind the scenes of this nascent industry, capturing its wild-west, anything-goes flavor. Likening his research to "hanging out in the Wright brothers' barn," Belfiore offers an inspiring and entertaining look at the people who are not afraid to make their bold dreams a reality. "The commercial space race is heating up so fast you need a cheat sheet to keep track of all the billionaires and gamblers vying to be the first private entrepreneur to blast paying customers into orbit. [Belfiore] does a stellar job introducing an intriguing cast of characters." â"Mark Horowitz, Wired. "The privatization of space travel is an essential step toward realizing our cosmic destiny. In his engaging, highly readable Rocketeers, Michael Belfiore tells the fascinating story of the entrepreneurs who have already made it happen." â"Buzz Aldrin. "A riveting, you-are-there account of how this ragtag collection of innovative thinkers, brave pilots, and bold visionaries isâ"right nowâ"launching one of the most exciting new industries in history. Belfiore's eloquent writing and exhaustive reporting really bring this mysterious, secretive world to life." â"Eric Adams, Popular Science.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. Jeffrey L. Ward (Maps) and Michael Marsland (autho (illustrator). First Printing [Stated]. xxvii, [3], 511, [1] pages. Maps. Sources for the History of the Peloponnesian War. Index. Minor edge soiling. DJ has slight wear and soiling. Donald Kagan (born May 1, 1932) is an American historian and classicist at Yale University specializing in ancient Greece, notable for his four-volume history of the Peloponnesian War. He formerly taught in the Department of History at Cornell University. At present, Kagan is considered among the foremost American scholars of Greek history. Known for his prolific research of the Peloponnesian War; Kagan is also famous for his work On the Origins of War and the Preservation of Peace, a comparative history examining four major conflicts (the Peloponnesian War, World War I, the Second Punic War, and World War II) and one non-conflict (the Cuban Missile Crisis) with the purpose of identifying how and why wars do or do not begin. The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) awarded Donald Kagan the National Humanities Medal in 2002. Derived from a Kirkus review: The tale of an ancient conflict, with ample leadership lessons for contemporary statesmen on fate and miscalculation. The Peloponnesian War (431-404 b.c.) ended a golden age of peace, prosperity, and cultural achievement in the Hellenic world. It featured Sparta, the leading army and authoritarian regime in Greece; Athens, the greatest naval power and imperial democracy; and allied city-states. With the death of Pericles two years into the war, Athens lost firm, consistent leadership and thereafter veered between peace and expansionist factions. At the end of hostilities, both sides had abandoned their war aims. The author points out innovative tactics, such as the use of enormous flame-throwers, with the same dexterity that distinguishes his portraits of major personalities like Nicias, the Athenian general who turned the Sicilian campaign of 415 b.c. into a debacle. Authoritative history demonstrating that the reactions of leaders during wartime have altered little.
