Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Minor wear to jacket, binding tight, internally clean. There is an almost mystical romanticism about the unique Black and Tan hounds of Scarteen. These are the descendants of the old Irish hound hunted by an ancient Irish family, and they and the family have survived together the vicissitudes of Irish history for over 350 years. Their reputation has drawn sportsmen from all over the world to take up the challenge of following them across the golden vale of Tipperary and Limerick. The writing of this book was prompted by Thady Ryan's decision to emigrate to New Zealand after a mastership spanning four decades. The author has complemented his text with an evocative "photographic record", appendices and a map of the Scarteen country.

She was raised a Quaker by her father, a bank manager and her mother, a children's novelist. At the age of fourteen, Anna hurt her knee during a fall and the injury never healed properly. Even though she could not walk well, she could still ride horses and drive a horse drawn buggy. It was this form of freedom that sparked in her great concern for the often horrible treatment of horses she witnessed on her day-to-day outings. Sewell wrote the story from the viewpoint of the horse, in first 'horse' person. In spite of her ill health, she finished her book and sold it to her mother's publisher: Jarrold and Sons of London, for.
