In addition, cell motility by eukaryotic flagella is the characteristic mode of cell locomotion in algal flagellates and most reproductive cells of algae. Algae use these cell motility systems mainly to orient themselves or their photosynthetic organelles in a suitable light gradient to optimize growth and reproduction. In consequence most of the motility systems are coupled to photoreceptors and are regulated by signal transduction cascades. Algal cell motility has thus attracted consid erable interest also from non-phycologists and some algal motility systems have become models of research in cell and molecular biology. This book summarizes some of the progress that has been made in recent years in the analysis of cell motility phenomena in the algae. Der Kosmos-Algenführer" ist das Bestimmungsbuch zu den häufigsten Süßwasseralgen Mitteleuropas. Alle behandelten Gattungen werden in Farbfotos vorgestellt. Ein farbiger Bildschlüssel erleichtert die Bestimmung. Unentbehrlich für Mikroskopiker, Biologen und Naturschützer. Hut ab, hier wurde eine echte Lücke in der Bestimmungsliteratur geschlossen, und das in sehr ansprechender Weise. Mir gefällt der schöne Übersichtschlüssel, der auf wenigen Seiten mit sehr klaren Zeichnungen die visuelle Bestimmung der meisten in Deutschland vorkommenden Algengattungen (Süßwasser, ohne Brackwasser wie z.B. Elbe-/Wesermündung etc.) ermöglicht. Der Schlüssel verweist jeweils auf eine Seite mit Farbfotografien und ausführlichem Text. Schon der Ansatz gefällt mir: die Beschränkung auf Gattungen von Algen (also Gruppen naher verwandter Arten) vermeidet "Scheinbestimmungen" von Einzelarten, die einer kritischen Überprüfung sowieso nicht standhalten, da es i.d.R. viele ähnliche, nahe verwandte Arten gibt, die sich genetisch oder über komplexe Merkmale wie Vermehrungstyp unterscheiden. Dieses Risiko der Scheinbestimmung trifft auf viele Klassiker der Mikroorganismenbestimmung zu, wie z.B. "Leben im Wassertropfen". Die Fotos sind meines Erachtens hervorragend. Die Bilder sind mit Interferenzkontrast aufgenommen und die hohe Auflösung des Bildes wird mit einer scheinbaren leichten "Weichheit" der Abbildung erkauft. Das wirkt auf den ersten Blick "unscharf"; mit stärkerer Abblendung des Mikroskopkondensos erscheinen Algen zwar kontrastreicher, aber Zilien und Zellstrukturen würden dafür hinter konktrastreichen Zellumrissen verschwinden. Übrigens sind die Autoren für die Fotos systematisch mit hohem apparativen Aufwand vorgegangen, denn viele einzellige Algen bewegen sich sehr schnell und taumelnd und nur eine spezielle Blitzkonstruktion ermöglichte die Aufnahmen. Nett sind auch die Textboxen, die vieles Wissenswertes zu Süßwasseralgen (Ökologie, Verwandtschaft, Historisches, Anwendungen.) beisteuern. Ein sehr gelungenes Werk für den Mikroskopiker (man benötigt ein Mikroskop, um die Algen zu bestimmen). Sehr gut auch für Mikroskop-Einsteiger geeignet: für Laien sehr anwendbar und wegen der Textboxen sogar unterhaltsam und (für ein Bestimmungsbuch ungewöhnlich) "lesbar", für den Biologen eine interessante, komplette Übersicht der Süßwasseralgengattungen von ausgewiesenen Experten. Anmerkung zum Mikroskopieren, das man ja praktisch parallel zur Benutzung des Buches macht: praktisch alle Arten kann man mit einem halbwegs anständigen Schülermikroskop beobachten, wobei feine Strukturen wie Zilien und Zellorganellen dann je nach optischer Klasse mehr oder weniger gut sichtbar sind.
