Publisher's boards, pictorial dustjacket. Fine. Evergreen / Taschen, 1998. 4to. 216 pp. Richly illustrated in colour. With index and bibliography. (Publisher:) "The young Boccaccio, returning to Florence from the Neapolitan court in 1340, sung the praises of gardens heavy with the perfumes of the Orient. Orange and lemon trees had been native to Andalusia and other parts of southern Spain since the Moorish invasion. However, it was not until Portuguese seafarers of the 16th century brought the sweet tasting Citrus aurantium sinensis back from the Far East that orange trees began to be valued and collected as exotic specimens. Soon they adorned the terraces and formal gardens of stately homes throughout Italy, France, Germany and England. Naturally, shelters were needed to protect these delicate plants from inclement weather. In 17th century France, architects strove to create suitably ornate settings for the coveted fruit trees. Louis Le Vau and Jules Hardouin-Mansart designed the first such buildings in Meudon, Versailles, Chantilly and Sceaux and called them orangeries. They served as models for many generations to come. Orangeries became an indispensable feature of formal parks and palace grounds. Their function and design varied from country to country and developed over the centuries. In Germany, 'Gartensäle' were used as assembly rooms for the staging of entertainments. In England, greenhouses displayed botanical collections, while forming decorative elements in their own right within the landscaped garden. After the eras of baroque splendour and rococo elegance, the orangeries of the mid to late i9th century took on a new significance. As urbanisation and the industrial revolution swept across Europe, architects took the opportunity to construct their vision of the Golden Age. Orangeries made a final appearance in the park of Sans-Souci, fulfilling the grandiose dreams of the Prussian King Frederick William IV: a fantastic conglomeration of styles, somewhere between Bramante's Belvedere and the Villa Medici.".
