A finales de otoño, el protagonista y narrador, Michal Witkowski, se retira a un resort turístico de playa, totalmente solitario en esa época del año, para escribir la novela que le proporcionará dinero, fama y…todos los premios literarios. Se aloja en una pequeña casa en medio del bosque pero le cuesta avanzar con el libro, ya que su atención se centra en su anfitrión Robert ("el Leñador") quien en realidad es un músico depresivo de mediana edad. Michal, intrigado con este personaje y siguiendo la pista de una fotografía, inicia una investigación que le conducirá a un antiguo centro de ocio de la época comunista y al olvidado caso de la desaparición de una belleza local. De una forma de lo más excéntrica y con la colaboración de los arquetípicos y grises personajes que se va encontrando, Michal indaga en el pasado de "el Leñador". Esta variación de la novela negra contiene los elementos de humor y temática gay habituales en la obra de Witkowski (aunque el componente gay no es tan explícito como en su anterior novela "Lovetown" publicada en España por Anagrama). Cuando el lector cree que está en medio de una típica novela negra, se encuentra con una obra que también le habla del contraste entre las Polonias vieja y nueva, entre la antigua mentalidad comunista y el nuevo capitalismo salvaje, se encuentra con un narrador dotado de una capacidad de observación de la realidad fuera de lo común, que describe el mundo hortera y kitsch de la sociedad de una forma original y divertida. El autor combina frases complejas y sintácticamente impecables al estilo de la novela policíaca del siglo XIX con frases cortas extraídas del lenguaje coloquial y en ocasiones vulgar de los personajes que el protagonista se va encontrando en el resort fuera de temporada.
