Romualdo ("Aldo") Borletti (1911-1967) known familiarly as "Micio", was the son of Senator Borletti, the first president and founder of La Rinascente. The Milanese department store was established after World War I with the aspiration of promoting new and higher standards of Italian design. Its name, La Rinascente (Rebirth), was conceived by the Italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio. After graduating from Bocconi University Aldo Borletti replaced his father at the helm of the department store. La Rinascente had suffered severe destruction during bombing in World War II. After the death of his father in 1939 Aldo was appointed vice-president. Once the war ended La Rinascente, now run by Aldo and his cousin Cicci Borletti, redoubled its efforts to promote standards of excellence in Italian design. In 1954 Aldo Borletti established the industrial design award Compasso d'Oro. The award stimulated the recognition of Italian design at home and abroad. Aldo became the company's president in 1957 and led it to arguably its most prosperous and productive period. The decade from 1957 until Aldo's tragic death resulting from a fall from his horse in 1967 was a period of unexpected milestones for the company. It expanded into global markets, opened new stores across the country and in 1962 reached 100 billion lire in sales. The recipient, the Princess di San Faustino, was born Lydia Bodrero in 1902 in Rome. At the time of her friendship with Aldo Borletti she was married to Ranieri Bourbon Del Monte Santa Maria, Prince di San Faustino. She was later married to the President of the Metropolitan Museum of Art Roland Redmond. She died in 2010.
