Dust Jacket Condition: dj. First Edition. First U.S. edition and first printing. Hardcover. 228 pages. The fifth book published in the U.S from the author of "The Unbearable Lightness of Being." A near fine copy in paper covered boards with a cloth spine with some slight color shift to the edges of the boards and in a near fine dust jacket with some very minor wear. Signed and very warmly inscribed by Kundera on the half title page in the year of publication. A spectacular association copy as the recipient was literary critic John Leonard who wrote a rapturous review of this book for the New York Times. From Leonard's review: "I ought to invoke Gunter Grass and Garcia Marquez because Mr. Kundera belongs in their demonic company. Dust off the glowing adjectives, those abused children, because they apply. A book reviewer is reduced to saying: this time, I really mean it.". Signed.

In the original Czech. Near Fine with slight tanning and soiling to covers, contents uncut. The scarce first edition of the Nobel Prize-winner's book of poetry. In an article on the author research database Gale writes: "In 1955 Kundera published a blatant piece of Communist propaganda. The long poem "Poslední máj (The Last May)" is an homage to Julius Fucík, the hero of Communist resistance to the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia. Full of bathos, the work conforms to the tenets of socialist realism and to the official Communist version of history. Some commentators have speculated that Kundera was commissioned by the party to write the piece; others have said that Kundera wrote this work as an act of cool calculation-to enable him to become a member of the Communist Party again.".

In original paper. Condition: Fine condition. First Hungarian edition. Typed. Published in a few copy. In original paper. 97 p. Probably the first translation of Kundera's The Owners of the Keys. The translation was prepared for the first foreign theather presentation of Owners of the Keys. In Hungary, the Miskolc National Theater first performed the The Owners of the Keys in 1963, and two years later, the Vígszínház Theater also staged it. In Miskolc, after four performances, it was taken off the bill, and the Vígszínház Theater's venture can also be considered a failure. On both occasions, the moral problem, which seriously undermined the basic idea of the play, and the Hungarian audience saw it as a "resistance drama." But the main reason for the failure was that in the 1960s, Hungarian theater and the Hungarian audience did not yet know what to make of Kundera's unusual dramaturgy. First Hungarian edition. Typed. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these).
