Alice Millard (1873 Ð 1938) was a Chicago-born rare book dealer and promoter of culture in the Arroyo Seco region of Los Angeles. After her husband GeorgeÕs death, Alice commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design a second home for her in Pasadena, which was called ÒLa MiniaturaÓ (The Little Museum). It contained fine pictures, china, silver, sculpture, and many other items, including her husbandÕs printed books and manuscripts. She left the collection to the Huntington Library. Millard influenced a later generation of booksellers and collectors including Estelle Doheny, William Andrews Clark, Jake Zeitlin, and Ward Ritchie. Octavo. 11 pp. 11 pp. Light blue wrappers. Bound with string. Includes blue envelope. Envelope is faded/yellowed at corners and has tear on top fold, of which is taped together. Book itself is a very good copy. First edition. One of 250 copies. Inscribed by Alice Millard in 1926 to Delmer Daves (1904-1977) Hollywood screenwriter, film director, and producer, best known for his Western movies: Broken Arrow (1950), The Last Wagon (1956), and The Hanging Tree (1959). Among Quiet Friends describes books as Òquiet friendsÓ and introduces MillardÕs ÒLa Miniatura,Ó particularly noting her book collection. This essay was written by Alexander Inglis (1879-1924), an American author and educator whose ideas about secondary education have shaped modern public schools. Among Quiet Friends was printed by John Henry Nash (1871-1947), a printer from Canada, who established his own press in San Francisco. He later established the John Henry Nash Fine Arts Press at the University of Oregon.

Ward Ritchie (1905-1996) was a very young man when he printed this, and the place of publication is in South Pasadena, where Ritchie's childhood home was located. It would not be long before his publications would bear the place name of Los Angeles instead. HeÊhas noted in several places that heÊfinished printing this catalogue during theÊMarch 10, 1933 Long Beach earthquake. The opening of Alice Millard's exhibitionÊwas the next day, March 11, and he delivered the catalogues just hours beforeÊit started. According to Ritchie, she found some problems with the printing ofÊthe catalogue and asked himÊto produce a second issue. Edges untrimmed. A little light dampstaining at the bottom edge ofÊthe last dozen pages, a little light foxing at fore-edge. A very good copy of a fragile early Ward Ritchie printing. First edition, second issue, of a scarce item, printed by Ward Ritchie for Alice Millard for her exhibition of Doves Press books. The two issues, according to the Ritchie checklist, consisted of one of 125 copies, with a later reprint of 50 copies (as per the Ward Ritchie Press and Anderson, Ritchie, & Simon,p. 70). The first issue is 9 3/16 x 5 13/16," that is a bit smaller than the present issue.ÊIt is printed on machine-made wove paper and bound in blue or gray wrappers. According to the checklist, this second issue consisted of fifty copies. the handmade laid paper of the second issue is a more expensive variety than that used in the first issue. In the first issue, the colophon bears the statement, "125 copies printed by Ward Ritchie. South Pasadena,California, March 11, 1933." In the present issue, the colophon simply says "Printed by Ward Ritchie, South Pasadena, Calif." Though we have handled both issues multiple times, we have not had the opportunity to compare the two issues side by side, but Michele Cloonan, author of the new biography of Alice Millard, did compare them, together with her husband, bibliographer Sid Berger, and they have noted that there were changes between the two editions, including cleaning up some weak impressions of the type, and in one case, correcting a typographical error by changing a period to a comma. Alice Parsons Millard (1873-1938) was known widely during her lifetime as a bookseller and a friend of other bibliophiles like Ward Ritchie and William Andrews Clark, as well as an important advisor to collectors like William Andrews Clark, Henry Huntington, Estelle Doheny. Caroline Poole and Templeton Crocker. She was also known for commissioning Frank Lloyd Wright to build her home, La Miniatura, in Pasadena. The first edition in book form of this essay on old books, which recounts a visit to La Miniatura, the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house where antiquarian bookseller Alice Millard lived and worked. This piece first appeared in the February 24, 1925, issue of the Pasadena Star-News. Octavo: [2, blank], [2], 11, [1, blank] pp. With a title page vignette, headpiece, decorative initial, and fleuron above the colophon. Printed with Garamond type on Kelmscott paper. Original stitched blue paper wrappers with printed dark blue titling on the front panel. A fine copy, housed in the original mailing envelope. Presentation copy, inscribed by Alice Millard to Lucille Miller on the front flyleaf: "To Lucile Miller, 'En Souvenir' from Alice Millard. La Miniatura - May Fourth - 1931." Miller (1901-89) was the librarian and book secretary to Estelle Doheny during the most significant period of Doheny's collecting activities and compiled the first major catalogue of the Doheny collection. Many of the finest books and the illuminated manuscripts in the collection were acquired from Millard (1873-1938), who played an important role in establishing Los Angeles as a major bibliographic center.
