Illustrated with 8 full-page plates, showing the sperm whale, the Bark "Willis", a page from Millet's journal as well as a number of plates showing the implements used and a number of whaling scene…s dating back to 1611. 8vo, in the original binding of patterned and polished blue cloth, the spine lettered in gilt. vi, [4], 46 pp. A very fine copy, a touch mellowed by age. FIRST EDITION OF THIS PRIVATELY PRINTED WORK. The Bark "Willis" was a vessel of one hundred and sixty-four tons and was built at Mattapoiset in 1838 by Ebenezer Cannon, a noted ship builder. He and his sons and grandsons built many of teh finest whaling vessels of their time. She made twelve voyages between 1844 and 1866 and it was on her fourth coyage that Samuel Millet kept his journal. It was her most successful voyage by far. When she was sold to New Bedford people in 1866, no more whale boats went out from Mattapoiset. She was the last, while New Bedford continued in the whaling industry with over 300 vessels sailing under the stars and stripes.
