Framed. Condition: Fine. Elsie Denise Millon (illustrator). A nostalgic charmer of a watercolor, simply composed, glamorizing the look and style of the Ancien Regime. The young man and woman are rendered a bit cartoonishly, such as one would find in book illustration. The lady coyly but willingly receives the somewhat foppish man's advances. They almost appear to be engaged in a dance. The watercolor is handsomely matted and framed. The full frame is 48 by 43 cm. The watercolor (visible, but this includes a painted framing) is 27 by 22.5 cm. The frame is a narrow fluted band, slightly more than 1.5 cm in width, and somewhat shallow. Within there is a thick black matting, about 9 cm in width, with a thick gilt beveling surrounding the picture. We are not certain of the frame material -- it seems of a synthetic wood -- but in our view, the frame and matting serve the picture perfectly -- compatible with an Art Deco sensibility, and drawing the viewer in. The artist, Elsie Denise Millon, was a French artist and book illustrator known for this kind of stylized imagery. As a commercial artist, she appears to have been active during the twenties to forties -- this doesn't mean she was not active beyond -- we simply don't know. The work is undated, so we have somewhat arbitrarily dated it 1930, which we consider a good rough estimate.

Très belle gouache encrée de Denise Millon, datant des années 30, représentant un personnage, féminin, en habit oriental, avec turban à plume, tenant un bel oiseau coloré d'une main, dans un décor fleuri, aux larges teintes rouges. Magnifique réalisation, d'une très grande finesse d'exécution, signé. L'oeuvre prend place dans un très charmant cadre en bois et dorure, aux quatre coins duquel sont stylisées des fleurs.
