Vi sono alcune inevitabili riferimenti storici alle vicende italiane, ma gran parte dell'opera verte sulla guerra di successione polacca, nella quale l'autore (Nevers 1678 - Metz 1766) fu implicato nella strategia diplomatica prima di completare in seguito la pacificazione col Regno d'Inghilterra.
