""Nikos Kazantzakis' own deeply conflicting views on the Russian Revolution are at the heart of this novel set in a Russia still in the aftermath of civil war -- a Russia to whom the pilgrims of the world are drawn by the legend of Lenin. Among them is Toda Raba -- an African.who… has abandoned his tribe and his gods -- whose sense of destiny is awakened by the Revolution, and who symbolizes -- in Kazantzakis' prophetic vision -- the rising of the African and Asian peoples from their centuries-long sleep." 220p. Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Good. First Edition. First printing of Amy Mims first work. Well rubbed at all edges, else good. Some creasing to wraps, and light cock to spine. Scarce. Collaboration with artist Minos Argyrakis, a work admired by both Henry Miller and Anais Nin. Artist and author had remarkable careers which intersected i…n an avant garde theatre venture called "The Ark of Amy", shut down by the Greek Junta of 1967. Like Argyraki's first album of drawings and texts in 1057, "Odos Oneiron (Street of Dreams)", "The Book of Amy" is a floating world of sacrilege and mythic images. Mim translated a number of important Greek authors, including Kazantzakis. Her most important contribution, the literature notes, consists of her own twelve books, beginning with the 1972 Collection of ?Prose-Poems? (entitled ?The Book of Amy?, and enthusiastically praised by Henry Miller and Anais Nin); continuing with five other books of poems; and culminating in her ?Greek Trilogy?, the 800-page prose account of her creative life in the Greek World, her extensive travels and her avant-garde theatre in the 1960?s, full of famous visitors of the period's artistic cohort.

Contact seller3-star sellerFirst Edition. Octavo. First printing. 220pp., This story was first written in 1929, after the author's return from the Soviet Union. The characters are, with one exception, reflections of the author himself, and represent his own deeply conflicting views of the Revolution. There is Rahel, a Polish-Jewish girl, drawn to Communis…m and working for the secret police, there is Azad, the exc-Checka murderer, who believes in the necessity for a new and purer revolution and thinks Communism must come from a change of man's soul, not from the machines and the materialism of Europe and America. There are others whom you will meet but towering over them all, in a mysterious way, is Toda Raba, an African Negro who abandons his tribe and his savage god to make a pilgrimage to Russia. He becomes the man of the future, and the Russian Revolution releases his energy and his sense of his own destiny. A near fine copy bound in ¼ rust cloth over green paper covered boards stamped in blind, spine lettered and decorated in a dark green one corner only slightly bumped in a very nice pictorial dust jacket with just a hint of toning and very light wear along the edges of the rear panel.
