Es wurden dazu chronische Schmerzen während der 27-tägigen Kur im Gasteiner Heilstollen mit verschiedenen Methoden erfaßt und dokumentiert. Als Modell für den chronischen… Schmerz diente die Spondylitis ankylosans (Morbus Bechterew). Die einzelnen Wirkmechanismen der Gasteiner Heilstollenkur sind nach wie vor nicht genau geklärt, werden jedoch der Trias Radon, Feuchtigkeit und Wärme zugeschrieben. Der schmerzlindernde Effekt dieser Therapie wurde, ebenso wie die Änderungen im Jahr nach der Kur, erfaßt. Dazu dienten Korrelationen zwischen Schmerzstärke, der Schmerzschwelle, Warm- und Kaltschwelle sowie verschiedene, mit dem Schmerzgeschehen in Zusammenhang stehende Blutparameter. Es wurde damit ein Beitrag zur Nutzen-Risiko-Abwägung der Radonkur im Rahmen der Indikationsstellung geleistet.
