Miriam Beard (1901-1983), described by one scholar as "the maverick daughter of Progressive reformers Charles and Mary Beard," apparently wrote just two books in her life: "Realism in Romantic Japan" (1930) and this one, jacket-blurbed as "an attempt in a new direction -- the biography of a type, instead of an individual." A dense and ambitious work, it sought "to present an assemblage of facts about the development of the business man and his influence on the rest of society," and is regarded as the first international cultural history of the businessman. The New York Times reviewer thought it a "brilliant and stimulating book." Red cloth on boards with bright gilt title box, and multiple stamped black borders around the title box. Elaborate spine design has alternating gilt and black horizontal lines. Book is tight, square, sharp-cornered and free of markings and flaws inside and out, other than: Prior owners name in ink on inside front cover, a small bubbling up of the cloth on the front, barely noticeable, and a very mild scuffing to top of spine. Close to fine. Dust Jacket is in Good condition, with the front showing well with a pictorial of an Egyptian and a ticker tape machine. Front flap is clipped at bottom and torn at top. Top of rear is torn and top of spine as well - see photos. Bottom of rear flap is torn at crease. Overall DJ has very little fading and areas that aren't torn have very minimal scuffing or shelfwear.
