Original Pictorial Wrappers. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 32 pages; Contents clean and complete in original yellow pictorial wrappers with image of chemical equipment on front wrapper. Former owner's name on front wrapper "Joshua Morse". This charming Civil War era almanac contains the usual pragmatic information on farriery, household tips, medical advice for treating wounds and injuries, astronomical data and predictions. Laid in is a curious folded broadside titled "Sample of McClellan Democracy". Though incomplete, this political broadside purports to present excerpts from genuine letters sent to a serving soldier - "E. Freyman." "These are only a few of the same character which have been sent into the ranks." to sway them politically. Here is one example of the excerpts: "Mr. E. Freyman - Sir -- I now take this Great injoying time to in form you that we air all hear as the following Names Below Reade we have a big time over the Nomination of George B. McClellan and George H. penelton of Ohio your Father State and Hear Below we will Give you all our mind as our Names Stand a Bout. Just such gone Dam Black Abolitionists as you Claim to Be if you Come Back hear and Call any of the Names Signed Below we will Nock your good Dam abolitionist out of you now you had Better never Rite any more Leters and name us Coper Heads this is fair warning of us good Democrats boys your Father is a good Democrat." -- Esselburns Corners, Sept 1th, 1864 There are three complete excerts and one partial, missing piece at right edge. Sheet is missing a couple inches at the bottom, torn at folds, faint staining to right side. Still a curious bit of political propaganda surviviing from the 1864 Presidential Campaign. The 1864 presidential election took place during the American Civil War. The election was noteworthy for occurring at all, an unprecedented democratic exercise in the midst of a civil war. Contrary opinions about the ongoing War led to intra-party conflicts for the Republicans and for the Democrats. A group of Republican dissidents formed a party named the Radical Democratic Party and nominated John C. Fremont as their candidate for president. In September 1864, Fremont declared that winning the Civil War was too important to divide the Republican vote so he withdrew and endorsed Lincoln. War Democrats also joined with Republicans as the National Union Party, with Lincoln at the head of the ticket. The Democrats were divided between the Radical Peace Democrats, known as Copperheads, who favored immediate peace with the Confederacy, and War Democrats, who supported the war. After the Union victory at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863, moderate Democrats proposed a negotiated peace that would secure Union victory. They believed this was the best course of action, because an armistice could finish the war without devastating the South. The 1864 Democratic National Convention nominated McClellan, a War Democrat, but adopted a platform advocating peace with the Confederacy, which McClellan rejected. The Democrats compromise ticket of pro-war General George B. McClellan for president and anti-war Representative George H. Pendleton for vice president failed to carry the day.

This very scarce cloth-bound copy of all issues of the Nottinghamshire literary periodical the Newark Bee, from March 1838 to February 1839. This work collects all twelve issues of the Newark Beeperiodical, from March 1838 to February 1839, into one full cloth bound volume.Very Scarce.TheNewark Bee was one of the earliest literary magazines to be published in the Newark-on-Trent area of Nottinghamshire and is of historical interest as evidence of the flourishing of the periodical press in the nineteenth century. It was issued monthly at one penny by the same local Ridge family firm who had famously published Byron's first two collections of poetry. Its editor, S. Reynolds Hole, was an English Anglican priest, author, and horticulturalist renowned for his expertise with roses. This volume gives a good impression of the discerning nature the Newark Bee, containing numerous poems, prose excerpts, translations, reviews, and critical essays. In full cloth binding with embossed decoration to the boards. Externally, generally smart with fading to the cloth at the spine and rubbing, heaviest towards the fore edge. Slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine and the extremities. Previous contemporary owner's neat inscription to recto of the front first free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound with generally bright, clean pages, barring light age toning and the odd spot, concentrated towards the endpapers. Very Good Indeed. book.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Second Printing. Second Printing. Hardcover. A collection of poetry tracts in the 18th century assembled and bound as a set showcasing typical and popular poetry writing and style in England. This was a common practice to gather political satire and literary tracts and bind them together, generally at the discretion of the owner or in some cases the printer and/or bookseller. The majority of these works are poetry written as political satire towards the Tory government. This method of binding separate works, 'sammelband', also speaks to contemporary collecting and publishing practices. The bound volume lists separate works as follows: [attrib.] Ward, Edward. "The Pleasure of a Single Life, or, the Miseries of Matrimony. Occasionally Writ upon the many Divorces Lately Granted by Parliment. With the Choice, or, the Pleasures of a Country-Life." [London]: Printed and Sold by H. Hills, in Black-fryars, near the Water-fide, 1709. Wilmot, John. Earl of Rochester, John Freke. "The History of Insipids, a Lampoon, By the Lord Roch---r.
